The lawn is coming out of winter dormancy. During this period the grass is developing new roots, rhizomes and tillers that will increase the density of the turf. Get started with a combination of an early application of a balanced fertilizer and a crabgrass pre-emergent. Broadleaf weeds will be growing vigorously and your lawn will need periodic spraying to minimize the weed population.
The lawn is preparing to go into summer dormancy. Broadleaf weeds can constantly germinate throughout the year so ongoing care needs to be provided. An insecticide may need to be applied to prevent damage to the turf from insects. If crabgrass controls were not put down in the Spring, then this is the time to control any crabgrass that has begun to emerge.
This is the best time of year to really work on improving the lawn. Seeding is best done at this time of year to provide ample time for turf grass roots to develop. The development of turf grass roots in the fall is important and a couple of applications of fertilizer will promote this development. Aeration reduces soil compaction and also increase the levels of oxygen in the soil.
